Yesterday I made my way over to the Carrefour shopping center at Poplar and Kirby. I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes weighing my options. I couldn’t decide between Petra’s Mediterranean sandwiches or “Lettuce Eat” Salad Co. If you read my article on Petra last year, you know how much I LOVE their mouthwatering, grilled paninis but curiosity eventually won and I chose Lettuce Eat. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews over the new salad shop but honestly I was a bit concerned about how fresh the veggies would be since it’s an “assembly line” style environment. Nothing irritates me more than soggy spinach but I opened the doors and hoped for the best.
The interior of Lettuce Eat is compact but well maintained and organized. I was happy to see they didn’t overwhelm the walls with décor and force the guests to dodge a plant every five steps. The menu is simple and straight forward with ten original salad combinations boasting playful names like “We Be Salmon” and “Kale Yeah”. If you’re like me & want to create your own, you can start from an array of lettuces and add on veggies, proteins, cheeses and crunchies! The veggie list is a far cry from the typical tomato and cucumber choices. Artichoke hearts, beets, chickpeas and Kalamata olives add a little flair while onions, peppers and broccoli round out the traditional side. And all you meat lovers out there won’t be disappointed either. There’s plenty of bacon & steak to clog your arteries for months to come and you can throw in a scrambled egg for good measure!
It’s easy to get distracted with the great selection and forget that Lettuce Eat is not a buffet. You can put whatever you want on your salad but they are priced per item. The proteins range from .69 for egg to $4.19 for Salmon. The veggies are mostly around .50 each but avocado will cost you 1.59, sigh. I had a spinach base with avocado, black beans, corn, pico de gallo, pineapple, Cajun chicken & croutons. My salad was around $14 total. Yes, it’s a bit pricey for a salad and you could obviously get something for $5 at Wendy’s, but you will get what you pay for. Though, Lettuce Eat doesn’t have a “dollar menu” the quality of their food far exceeds anything a fast food chain could offer. Even after they hand chopped each ingredient and blended in a delicious ginger soy dressing, soggy spinach was not an issue! Oh how the vegetable gods rejoiced! I could have easily ate half the salad and saved the other half for lunch the next day but, of course I tried to dominate the whole thing in one sitting. (oink oink )
The cherry on top of this wonderful experience was the customer service. Every employee at Lettuce Eat knows their role and how to do it quickly. They were very efficient but friendly. I never felt like I was being pushed out the door to get to the next ticket.
If you love salads.. or wraps, because they can do that too, you need to check out Lettuce Eat!
You wont regret it.
