I used to be one of those people who thought a sandwich was a just sandwich. No matter how many different meats and veggies you piled on top of each other, at the end of the day it was still just a bunch of stuff squished between two slices of bread. I got this cheery attitude from my habitual chain sub shop hopping. You know the type. They display their “fresh ingredients” in tiny plastic containers that sit out on the counter for hours on end. Sandwiches seemed like subpar food to me because I kept going to places that focused on feeding the masses instead of creating an item that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Their buffet style sandwich creation is fine but if you want better than fine skip conveyor belt lunch lines. I can promise you, they don’t have the Philly Cheesesteak of your dreams.
The light bulb clicked on for me the first time I had “The Chilean” from Pop’s Deli.It is called THE Chilean because it is the one and only sandwich on earth that can combine green beans, guacamole and hot sauce in a way that excites your taste buds and blows your mind. Never in my wildest dreams would I consider putting green beans on a bun. In all honesty, I spent most of my childhood hiding those squishy, slimy little things under a bed of mashed potatoes so I could show my mom a “kind of happy” plate. But, that’s what The Chilean does to you. Any preconceived notion of what you think it will taste like is so far off that you question everything you’ve ever ate. It is the pinnacle of flavor and creativity. Each sub is made to order with gooey & melted cheese over perfectly diced chicken then covered with tomatoes, lightly marinated green beans and a stich of hot sauce to complete the olfactory overload.
The sandwich is filing, but please oh please, don’t skip the homemade chips. I swear if these chips were sold in the grocery store, I would take my life savings & throw it into Pop’s stock. My addiction alone would support their dominance on Wall Street. These just aren’t the average ruffles. They swim around in the fryer for a few minutes before they make it to your plate & those extra seconds of angst are worth the wait. As I bit down on my first chip, the extreme crunch was met with a burst of spice. I would’ve never known they were covered in oil 5 minutes prior. Pop’s mastered the combo of grease and salt. I usually try to only eat half of my side so I don’t go into a food coma right after lunch, but those bad boys were demolished 5 seconds after they hit the table.
I love this place. It’s a bit of a drive but after you try it you will start making up reasons to take the trip.
Side note: They dont have a website so I’m including a link to their Facebook page.
