The River Terrace Restaurant is one of Harbor Towns best kept secrets. I say it’s a secret because you can’t get to the restaurant from the outside. You have to take several turns through Paulette’s and walk all the way to the back corner before you realize there’s an elevator indicating something is upstairs . This elevator, concealed by a maze of rooms full of candles and tapestries, transports you up a couple stories to what feels like a secluded room atop a towering castle in a fairy tale. When the doors finally open, you quickly realize you are not being banished to a dark chamber. Instead, you look straight ahead towards a breath taking view of the Mississippi River. I went right at sunset after a storm and even though the sky was covered in clouds, I couldn’t take my eyes off the horizon.
The seating is very limited but the intimacy adds to the overall atmosphere of the room. So many restaurants get caught up in “setting the mood” that they end up overwhelming their guests with décor and ambiance. The River Terrace perfectly balanced dim lighting & simple furniture so the outdoor scenery could take center stage. The music was mellow and the breeze from the water made me wish I had a hammock to kick back in. Note to guys: This is the PERFECT spot for a date night. Do it. Thank me later.
Now let’s talk food….
The menu heading says “small plates” and that is exactly what they mean. We got Teriyaki Chicken Skewers and the Mojo Shrimp. They were both very flavorful & The Mojo Shrimp came with a Cilantro Lime dipping sauce that was to die for but they are definitely appetizers. This isn’t one of those places where you get a 10lb plate of nachos to share with the table and have plenty left over. I would suggest eating dinner somewhere else and coming here afterwards for drinks. The drinks are something to mention too. I had a Stella and my mom got a Mississippi Sunset aka fruity concoction in a pretty glass. The combination of vodka, triple sec and raspberry liqueur was sheer genius. I am not a huge fan of the “fru fru” drinks but this one had a kick and they filled the glass to the top! I literally want to jump out of my seat when I find a bartender who understands the value of not serving a half empty drink.
I don’t know if it was the cocktails or the wind in my hair, but I fell in love with The River Terrace and will most definitely be coming back!
